Our Appliance FAQ's

We are happy to help with some of your most frequently asked appliance repair and appliance installation questions!

How do I schedule a repair?

Give us a call.  You’ll have an appointment booked before you hang up!  Or complete our online request form.  We call as soon as a new request arrives.  Our goal is to have everyone booked promptly as we understand how much you need your appliances.

What do I need to do to when booking an appointment for repair?

When you contact Appliance Guy Pro be prepared to provide your contact information, the make and model number of your appliance and a description of what the machine is or is not doing.  An easy way to provide the model and serial number is by texting us a photo of the tag along with your name.  If the issue is intermittent, take a video and send it along so our technician can hear and see what is happening; often our techs may arrive at a home and be unable to make a diagnosis because they can’t duplicate the issue.

Do you offer appliance repair for property management firms?

Yes, we do!  We provide appliance repair services for many local property management firms across HRM. Our property management clients appreciate that we are a local service partner with a focus on timely service.  Prompt repair keeps your tenants happy, and we educate users on proper appliance use and care, to protect the landlord’s investment.

How do you manage scheduling?

Clients are scheduled as they call in and as parts arrive.  On the day of the appointment our technician reviews the appointments and organizes calls along a route, allowing travel time between appointments.  We prioritize refrigerator repairs early in the day to minimize food loss for homeowners or tenants.  Technicians contact everyone on the morning of the appointment and provide a 2-hour window when they can be expected. If they are running late you will be contacted immediately.

How much will a repair cost?

Your appliance repair fee of $100 includes a diagnosis, cost estimate for any parts and an estimate of how long before parts will be in.  This allows a client to make a repair or replace decision.  If we return to install parts, there is labour fee of $50 plus the cost of parts.  Sometimes a technician will call after your booking is made to do a pre-diagnosis.  This allows us to anticipate what parts may be needed so they can bring them along and save you a return labour fee.

Is your work covered by warranty?

Yes, we provide a 30-day warranty on labour and a 90-day warranty on parts.  Always call if you have any questions or concerns after a repair.

What can I expect during a visit?

Top quality services, at fair prices, delivered by well trained, pleasant staff.  Technicians arrive with the tools and equipment necessary to make your repair and are required to meet health and safety regulations.  Because we focus on safety, technicians do not remove protective footwear or take unusual risks.  They use the right tools to make each task easy and safe and strive to leave your home just the way they found it.

How do I know whether to repair or replace my appliance?

To buy or not to buy – that is the question so many clients ask us.  We recommend you consider the age of the appliance and the cost of repair.  Our tech will give you an educated diagnostic and their opinion upon diagnosing. Sometimes there is no alternative, as parts may no longer be available.

Can I fix it myself?

Our advice is no.  We recommend a professional care for your appliances.  Keep in mind that if your appliance is covered by warranty, or subject to a recall, doing an installation or repairs yourself will void that agreement.  As well, DIY repairs may lead to more issues later or cause a safety hazard.

My appliance won’t turn on. Now what do I do?

Check to see if there is power elsewhere in your home.  If there is, go to your electrical panel and turn the breaker fully off and fully back on.  This also resets the appliance’s computer.  If it still won’t work, it’s time to call for repair.

Why is my washer is shaking and moving?

A common cause of your washer moving or shaking is an unbalanced load or an overloaded machine.  Monitor how you load your machine for a few days.  A tip – the heaviest wet material should be the majority of the load and add enough clothes to surround the drum, enabling the items to balance properly.  If there is no change, it may be time to have it checked.

How long does an appliance last?

This is an age-old question, and a tough one.  On average our answer is that if you follow the user manual instructions and do proper care and maintenance outlined in the user manual it will prolong the lifespan and offer optimal operation of every appliance.  Soap scum and lime scale build up inside the machine.  Use the washer clean cycle every 30 days or 30 washes.

How do we approach appliance repair? The Four C’s

Concern – understand and define the concerns of the appliance owner;

Cause – get to the bottom of the issue and find the cause;

Countermeasures – determine what measures should be taken to correct the problem, which can be anything from leveling an appliance to replacing parts, and inform the client of their options, costs and timelines; and

Check (and recheck) – our technicians run an appliance through cycles several times before leaving your home to ensure a repair is successful.

How long will I be without my appliance?

This is probably the most popular question, after ‘how much will it cost?’  We understand how frustrating it is without an appliance you depend on every day.  We’ll be there as soon as our schedule allows and do any repairs as soon as we can get parts.  We carry common parts on the truck and may do the repair immediately, but other times it takes up to a week to get a new part.  Our technicians will tell you the cost of parts and the delivery time before they leave your home.

How do we help our customers improve the lifespan of their appliances?

We educate customers on current appliance use and care practices to optimize the lifespan of their machines at every visit.  We recommend homeowners refer to their user manual often and keep it in a safe place close at hand for easy reference.

Do you repair all types of appliances?

At Appliance Guy Pro we repair most appliance brands and receive training on new appliance models regularly.  However, we do not repair propane or gas appliances or refrigerator compressors.  When you call to book an appointment we will ask you to tell us about your appliance.

How do I protect my investment in an appliance?

We recommend homeowners keep their user manual in a safe place close at hand for easy reference and refer to it often.  It is also wise to keep the bill of sale for all your appliances in a safe place and take a photo of each appliance’s model and serial number tag.  If you do not have a model number we cannot order parts, it’s that simple.
